Don’t Create Any More WLANs than Absolutely Needed

October 29, 2013

We frequently discuss with customer’s the importance of not creating “SSID sprawl”.  Don’t create any more WLANs than you absolutely need. In today’s world, there should really only be a need for about a maximum of three ESSIDs.

1. 802.1X Secured with WPA2 – For Employee Secure access

2. A PSK network for devices that do not support 802.1X.

3 . An optional Open Guest network.

This great calculator by Andrew Nagy will give a good understanding of the overhead the additional ESSIDs create in your environment and how they steal a WLAN’s most precious resource, airtime.
