Investing in the Next Generation of Cyber Leaders

September 08, 2026

Andrew Tolbert, a high school graduate from Illinois who will be attending Purdue University, was named recipient of Optiv’s annual BEN employee resource group scholarship in 2026.

The scholarship reflects Optiv’s efforts to empower future cyber leaders and address the industry’s talent shortage while simultaneously promoting inclusive representation.

Turning Personal Experience into Purpose

Tolbert’s interest in cybersecurity grew as he witnessed friends and family being targeted by phishing scams, as well as fraudulent emails and text messages. He plans to pursue a career as a security analyst with a goal of protecting vulnerable populations from cybercrime.

“Seeing the impact of deception both online and in my personal life shaped my perspective and strengthened my commitment to cybersecurity,’’ Tolbert says. “My goal is to think like a cybercriminal, so I can help protect others from threats they may never see coming.’’

Tolbert says he is grateful to Optiv for the scholarship and the opportunity to continue his education as he works toward a career in cybersecurity.

The BEN scholarship is available to STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) students who are U.S. citizens, U.S. nationals or permanent residents.
