Cybersecurity efforts at power utilities have long focused on software breaches and digital blackouts. But groundbreaking research from Optiv this year exposed a far more dangerous threat: the ability to turn clean energy hardware into cyber physical weapons.

 

By hijacking smart inverters across solar panels, EV chargers and battery systems, attackers can trigger Coordinated Supraharmonic Injection (CSHI), blasting destructive, high-frequency energy directly into local power grids. Standard protection relays are blind to these frequencies, allowing stealth waves to bypass defenses and literally melt critical distribution transformers from within.

 

 

Mitigating the Risks of Homogeneity

The operational stakes couldn't be higher. With replacement lead times for power transformers currently stretching past 100 weeks, a synchronized attack on the distribution edge could cripple regional energy infrastructure and freeze local economies for years.
