Optiv + Palo Alto Networks = Winning Team for Retailer’s IoT Device Security

The Situation – An Urgent Need to Securely Monitor Numerous IoT Devices

A major sports retailer recently opened a large new R&D facility filled with internet of things (IoT) devices. Their security team received alerts every time a new device connected to their network, but they lacked the necessary visibility to identify and assess connected devices and build an onboarding segmentation enforcement plan.

Due to the sensitive nature of the research being done in the facility, the retailer’s security team received budget approval from the board to purchase technology that would enhance visibility into any new risks brought in by the IoT devices.

The Solution – Visibility, Prevention and Zero Trust Enforcement in a Single Platform

Building on a standing relationship with Optiv, our client requested we facilitate a purchase from a vendor of their choosing. Our selected vendor would need to provide:

  • Visibility into new and existing connected devices
  • Easy implementation – preferably an application programming interface (API) to facilitate smooth integration
  • Broad coverage of a variety of device types
  • A path towards enforcement (the client’s long-term goal)

Our client narrowed the list to three vendors, all of which Optiv supports. They selected Palo Alto Networks based on their ease of implementation, as the competitor technologies would have required additional testing across environments and may have necessitated further changes to their security stack.

“This facility is instrumental to our efforts in pushing boundaries and driving “what’s next” in our industry. Foundational to those efforts is backstopping the R&D landscape with comprehensive cybersecurity solutions.”

– Applications Security Administrator, Major Sports Retailer

Industry Served: Retail

Our Starting Point

  • Lack of visibility into the client’s connected IoT devices, delaying ability to establish enforcement standards
  • Client had existing tech preferences for security orchestration, automation and response (SOAR), with little interest in switching
  • Executive mandates on IoT device visibility meant successful delivery was crucial
  • New process for the client, with no easy implementation and integration process

Accelerating Forward

Selected vendor Palo Alto Networks (PANW) IoT Security Solution delivered ML-powered visibility, prevention and Zero-trust (ZT) enforcement in a single platform:

  • Quick and accurate discovery of all IoT, OT, IT and Bluetooth devices, even those never seen before
  • Best-in-class protection instead of an alert-only approach, keeping devices safe from all threats and vulnerabilities
  • Zero trust security with automated discovery, assessment, least privilege access policies and one-click enforcement
  • Integrated workflows with simplified sensorless deployment and workflow automation across existing IT and security solutions

Client Outcomes

  • Project funded and sponsored – initiative to increase device visibility is now prioritized and funded by the board, as well as sponsored by the corporate information systems team
  • Beneficial collaboration established – will continue working the corporate information systems team to complete implementation and build an enforcement program for the IoT network
  • Moving to an enterprise agreement to provide coverage for the client’s full portfolio of PANW products
